Cost of data plan in Canada (really bad)

Phone plans in Canada could be better for sure. Whenever I travel to the states, I use the sim card there $20 with unlimited calls, text and 2gb high speed data and reduced after that. Which is usually more than enough for me for the month.

@SkyHigh88 Which one? A friend of mine suggested a Mexican sim, which is for Mexico, USA and Canada

sounds like there is a limit in editing (delete this post mod, thx)

yes, Telecom is a regulated business in Canada, as well as in US/Europe.
not just telecom, but banking, energy, water, food etc. in fact Canada has defined 10 Critical Infrastructure (CI) : https://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/ntnl-scrt/crtcl-nfrstrctr/cci-iec-en.aspx
my point is, a more regulated business environment tends to "limit" monopoly, business malpractices, corporate greed, concentration...which seem more prevalent in US/Canada than EU. in North America, businesses set the rules...in EU, businesses face tighter controls. examples:
_ protecting people data on the internet --> GDPR (EU)
_ Paris Agreement --> climate change regulations (EU)
_ Digital Market Acts --> oversight of internet platforms (EU, expected in early 2023)
_ food regulations --> GMO is highly regulated in EU but almost undisputed here and US

Yeah its crazy expensive!
0 -
Maybe it’s justified?
0 -
this is so crazy and frustrating !
0 -
Are you agree that if the government will open the gate to anothers big telecom companies the prices will decrease dramatically?
0 -
Not about to happen though

Something similar happened some years ago in Italy. Two of the three main competitors have been unified to make room for Iliad (french company) which started a very aggressive marketing campaign offering very low prices and all the others had to adapt! Forgot to mention that 3 company have to exist at the same time in term of infrastructure... It's a law against monopoly

We need the same thing to happen over here!!

I lived Milan 20 years a go or so, and I had la Tre that was recharging my account for the incoming text and calls :D
0 -
La Tre? What does that mean?
0 -
Yeah! Everything changed now! Wind and Tre are the same thing now! The other two main competitors were Vodafone and TIM. There is iliad too now
0 -
Every time I go I see a new company verymobile for example, there are plenty of MVNO
0 -
Ah ok I see, never heard of Tre before…
0 -
The main problem are the property of the infrastructures! If the same three competitors own all of them, they can easily decide the prices!

@neverwinter I use t-mobile visitor sim card

Regarding the high prices of phone plans in Canada compared to other countries, can someone explain to me why you can have a Mexican plan, with unlimited minutes and data for ~300 pesos, and you will have the Canada/US calls and roaming included.
0 -
yes he earns how much the maxicain he comes to work here 6 months it gives them 2 years solar there
0 -
good to know
0 -
Well, because in Mexico, if you try to increase the price no one will use their phone and pay for the plan. It has to be in line with the economy of that specific country
0 -
I agree with you if the plan was only for Mexico. However, the plan can be used in both Canada and the USA without any problems. The only difference is that you will have a Mexican phone number.
0 -
yes no one can call us if it's a mexico number
0 -
Are you saying that if someone has a Mexican number cannot call you/us? Why? I am receiving international call, without any problems
Copy and past from the provider page

80$ in 2008 quebec unlimited one given g ....today 25$
0 -
And your point is? 🥁🥁
Yes, but in 1995, my B... phone was costing me an arm and a leg, in 2000 my DSL wit B... was cheaper and faster than the one in France, an house was costing 60K, the gas was .50c or less, etc, etc. No sense for this post. Here we are talking about today conditions/prices.
Couples days ago, you justified that in Canada the cost is high for the population, the total area (not the covered area), etc etc Without taking into consideration, the real area covered, the kind of covered area (which is making a difference) the concurrent calls supported per area, for example
My point is, why some foreign can use the infrastructure paying less than local users? Should the local have better terms? Are we paying too much?
1 -
yes we are more people who use a mobile today its help on the price
labor costs more here than in France
there are many factors to calculate
0 -
Check this https://www.statista.com/statistics/797412/videotron-total-net-income/ and this https://www.statista.com/statistics/797403/videotron-total-annual-revenue
It is only an example, I took V only because here we are with them
Why do you think the labour cost is higher here?
We agree that there are many factors, and these are only small talks
0 -
There is one and only one reason for the high prices in Canada and it’s the lack of competition, period. Forget the arguments like wide spaces vs low population, it is BS. Other countries, like Australia for instance, have the same « problem » and they managed to drive the prices lower by introducing outside competition.
1 -
I totally agree! It's a closed market! They are only speculating on this and use the vast territories and the low population density to justify that! They need a real competitor to come in and drive the prices down, but it has to be incentivized by the government otherwise it will not have the possibility and power to really change the market.

definitively approved: Rogers to buy Shaw and Quebecor to buy Freedom
will fizz users be able to make free calls thru freedom network ?
what will be the benefits for us ?
i believe videotron users likely to benefit first.
Quebecor spent $2.5 B to buy freedom (ex Wind Mobile)...fizz and videotron users could fill the bill ??

Did not know this!
0 -
Thank you for informing us! I did not know this either
0 -
so what do you think will happen?
0 -
we will know in the future not so far
0 -
Ah ok I hope prices go down!
0 -
No problem
0 -
it will surely change with the purchase of Freedom
