Understanding VoLTE and its implications.

In my opinion, 4G LTE will be around for a long time, mobile providers will instead add antennas to increase coverage and reduce dead zones

I realy hope they do that I rater have better connection everwhere then 5g!
2 -
4G LTE close probably after 2030.

4G has been around for almost 20 years, apparently it was already called 3G+

Thanks fizz0

Do you guys have news regarding Videotron plan about shutting 3G down? I cannot find anything online and I'm not sure how long do I have before I will have to replace my actual phone since it's not certified for VoLTE

About Fizz and her yellow color mobile sister company I don't know but about red color company I seen on their website are planning to retire 3G network on July 31, 2025

Its been a while! Canada is so slow upgrading their mobile infrastructure.
1 -
It is very expensive, the territory is vast and there are only 40 million of us.
0 -
Yea and they also had to remove huawei 5g equipment I'm sure it didnt helped.
0 -
Yeah I read about that. That's why I asked. No certain news from the other carriers it seems… let's see what 2025 will bring to us
1 -
That is very good point, it takes time.
0 -
Hopefully they will annouce the removal of the 3g ahead of time.
0 -
Ya, they should give some time.
0 -
Some say by the end of 2025
0 -
Thanks for the info.
0 -
It's coming soon I think
0 -
Yes probably hopefully they will give a date soon.

Hopefully the communication come ahead of time and with some sweet promos on phones, since I will be forced to change my phone because Fizz didn't whitelist it…

It must have come out recently:

I have a Sony Xperia PRO-I (2021) US Variant which is fully compatible with all Fizz bands. I have the VoLTE SIM.
I basically have to switch SIM because this is not a Fizz approved phone? Is this a software or hardware limitation? My device supports VoLTE….
1 -
Support LTE yes but not by Fizz. 🫤

I have a Pixel 3. It's VoLTE compatible but not supported by Fizz.
There is no way I'm replacing a perfectly working phone for those reasons. I love Fizz but I'll just have to go to a different Carrier.0 -
Your model is other of Canada or USA ?
eSIM compatible:

Filed a complaint with Fizz and they said for technical reasons they're not adding any devices to their whitelist for any reason and without exception. Incredibly ridiculous, this kills a market of phones indefinitely. I get this isn't Fizz exclusive but why now we're locked into Apple, Google, Samsung, Motorola? If this whitelist is the be all end all why are there no standards for what is and isn't approved? Seems like a ridiculous black box to force customers to buy phones through carriers (god forbid they sell a phone that can't do VoLTE on their own network!)
On the consumer side, I'll be reaching out to websites like FrequencyCheck to recommend they to update their procedures for classifying if a device is supported - consumers need the information to know "yes it supports the bands but you won't be able to make phone calls" - expect a mass exodus among confused customers during this change.
Taking bets for if Fizz delays this.
1 -
This will create a lot of frustration. And a possible loss of subscribers.
2 -
This should be illegal.
0 -
it is illegal and no one cares by the way

Fortunately there are lots of choices and even better to choose from..already did..and I'm so happy...dont hesitate a second..just move out.. support just cant help ..they are just a mimic..they have an good always working "excuse"... it is was your choice to come to us, now live with it as is

@JustOneFizzCustomer this is forbidden to name other provider here. Second, Fizz have number to check if yes or no VoLTE is supported. #8378 #TEST.
Possible to view in your account too.

Thanks ! At least I can keep my One plus 11 if it doesnt work here.
0 -
With Fizz, you need to buy the phone first and then call #TEST and hope for the best. If your phone is not compatible because of their arbitrary list, the support will tell you
> If I were you, I'd buy a phone directly from us.
Yeah right. This is very anti-consumer and feels like we're back to SIM locked phones.
Anyway, I switched providers yesterday, and I encourage anyone with a non-compatible phone to do the same. Vote with your money.4 -
Yes sadly the Pixel 3 is eSIM compatible (as shown in #1) but not in the "List of phones certified VoLTE with Fizz" (#4 in the page)…
I've called #TEST and the check failed hence my original message.

Mostly a limitation from fizz. There's many VoLTE phones that are not supported by fizz.

Thanks ! that's clear.

thank you!

I'm among the other victims of this VoLTE move. I love my old Galaxy Note 9 phone with the pen, dual SIM, SD card and regular phones jack and absolutely didn't plan to change it as I bought this model intentionally for its unique features. Overall I'm more than a decade with lovely Note series… It is more than just device for cellular voice calls (I don't talk much) and there are no alternatives for that.
If a phone can connect and use LTE data the voice calls over it are a (voice over LTE protocol) settings matter to configure the phone properly route voice call over the data. So despite it's compatible with VoLTE and can work on such networks (tested and certified by other providers across the globe in the past) this certification (provisioning) has to be enabled(done) by Fizz on Fizz side only, otherwise it won't connect even with the new SIM with the red bolt logo (just tested it) and there is no any way to reach those settings manually without flashing and wiping the phone (and even after that there are complications and consequences).
Seems like Fizz choose to save the headache and just went with very common, most used trend phone models list, cutting all other verity that might be considered as non-significant for Fizz to bother with. Fizz saves money on the effort to include more phones (it requires some work but should be relatively easy as it already done by other big providers) so this money the end users will have to pay instead which kills the idea "you saving money with Fizz". Not anymore. For me the only device with a pen from Samsung is available for more than 2500$ + tx so even if I get a huge discount on the plan and will pay only some 10$ for the plan itself + phone price - it's a lot and absolutely unnecessary!
This indeed feels like we are back to a sim locked phone era or a new way to massively enforce users buy new phones in Fizz shop if you wish to put it this way. This is deeply disappointing. A lot of people concerned for a year already and nothing changes, not even a try. Unfortunately many other providers in USA gladly (for them) went down to this path to benefit from phones sales. I would obviously need to leave Fizz before July even if I end up buying a new device anyways and probably migrate the whole family with all other services after many years. Sad.

Thanks for the explanation.

Unfortunately they decided to not certify a lot of compatible phones. Probably to sell more compatible phones themselves…
0 -
That totally helps! thank you!!!

Hi, yes and no, because you can buy the phone wherever you want as long as it's a Canadian or US version that is on FIzz's Volte compatible phone list.
0 -
Yeah I know that, but for less tech savvy people it could be misleading. Since you receive an email by Fizz stating that you have to change your device and you can buy a new one directly from Fizz.

I ultimately decided to switch from a still functioning Pixel 4XL to a Pixel 9 Pro because of the VoLTE certification. Since the battery needed to be replaced soon and the sim card tray broke I decided to do it sooner than later but honestly, I am not happy with Fizz leaving so many people stranded with perfectly functional and volte-compatible devices just because they lack the effort to certify them!

Hey! 👋
Great question! Yes, in theory, if your phone supports VoLTE, it should just work. However, Fizz uses a VoLTE whitelist to ensure that devices are properly configured to work with their network.
The reason for this whitelist is to ensure compatibility between the device and the network. Even if a phone technically supports VoLTE, some phones may need specific carrier settings or firmware updates to work smoothly with Fizz's network. The whitelist helps Fizz ensure that all supported phones will have a reliable and high-quality VoLTE experience.
If your phone isn't on the list, it doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t work—it just means that Fizz may not have tested it or doesn’t guarantee full functionality yet.
If you're having trouble with VoLTE on a supported phone, it’s worth reaching out to Fizz support to see if there’s anything they can do! 😊📶
