I have an iphone 7 that works across Ontario. If I upgrade my plan for USA coverage will this phone work in the USA?

For calls probably not. Your phone must be VoLTE compatible on the Fizz network to be able to make and receive calls in the US. iPhone 7 is not. You need iPhone 8 and up. Data and texts should work though.

Please note, calls will stop working on iPhone 7 in Ontario as well in the not too distant future.

My iPhone 7 Plus works with VoLTE

In that case, @Kaminsky19, please run the VoLTE test, dial #8378, to see of VoLTE compatibility is also available on your iPhone 7. If it says, you made a successful VoLTE call, then it should work it the US as well.

    Hello Kaminsky19,

Thank you for reaching out to us.

This issue is a bit complex due to the compatibility aspect and also the Fizz Volte compatibility. Even though the phone might be Volte compatible, it needs to be Fizz Volte Compatible. According to our compatibility list, you will need at least an iPhone 8 as @MobileFizzer_VBMV6 said. You have here the list with the compatible devices: How do I know if I can use my own phone with Fizz? | Fizz

Even if the phone is not on this list, since it is Volte compatible it can work with Fizz, however since Fizz does not certify this model, issues can appear such as incoming calls issues, texts and so on. You can test the phone compatibility, following the instructions provided by @MobileFizzer_VBMV6.

In essence the phone might work, however Fizz does not guarantee a perfect functionality due to this compatibility aspect. If you want to be sure, you need to have one of the phones in the provided list. Since your phone is working now, if you upgrade the coverage it can still work, however, as explained, there can be some issues that you might encounter since the phone is not on the Fizz compatible list.

I wish you a wonderful day!

    Hi,

It's hard to say as the website doesn't list the device as certified for voLTE with Fizz Even in Canada.

My iPhone 7 Plus works with VoLTE, and yes, it works in the USA.

    Good morning @Kaminsky19

As I understand it, the question of “will it work” has two parts. Is the phone capable of volte and does the carrier support that particular phone on their network. As for the iphone, the technical specs can vary from country to country that the phone was made for.

I asked ChatGPT the following question, but be aware that GPTs such as ChatGPT often contain errors and @MobileFizzer_VBMV6 could well be correct.

“Which American mobile carriers support Canadian iPhone 7?”

    Answer:

“If you mean a Canadian-market iPhone 7, the key is the model number. Most Canadian iPhone 7s are A1778, which is a GSM/LTE model without CDMA support. Apple lists the A1778 as supporting a broad range of LTE bands.
Apple’s current carrier information still lists AT&T, T-Mobile, Cricket, Consumer Cellular, Metro, Mint, etc. as supporting iPhone LTE/VoLTE, but that doesn’t mean every old iPhone model is accepted by every carrier.”

    U.S. carrier

    Canadian A1778 iPhone 7

    AT&T

    Yes

    T-Mobile

    Yes

    Mint Mobile

    Yes, uses T-Mobile

    Metro by T-Mobile

    Yes

    Cricket

    Yes, uses AT&T

    H2O Wireless

    Yes, uses AT&T

    Consumer Cellular

    Generally yes

    Boost Mobile

    Depends on SIM/network

    Verizon

    Not officially compatible

    Visible

Not a good choice for A1778

    U.S. Cellular

    Not officially compatible

If Fizz’s roaming partner in the USA is one of those listed with “yes” above and your iPhone is the correct model, all indications are that it will work just fine.

You should confirm volte compatibility as @MobileFizzer_VBMV6 recommended as a start

    Cheers,

    Brad
