Device Question (preloaded Fizz software?)
I'm looking at going with Fizz, and want to finance a Google Pixel with the company. I have two questions pertaining to privacy:
- Is the Google pixel identical to what I'd buy at Best Buy, or is there preloaded firmware on the device installed by fizz? For example, I once financed a phone with Rogers, and there was a Rogers app already loaded into the firmware. I was not okay with this, and it made me wonder about their data collection practices.
- Secondly, is the phone properly ublocked so that I can install alternative firmware like GrapheneOS?
I take my privacy seriously, and would really appreciate any helpful feedback. Thanks everybody.

Hello @Interested ,
Thank you for showing your interest in our services.
All phones purchased from Fizz are fully unlocked, and no custom firmware, applications, or software are preinstalled by Fizz on any of the devices sold on our website.
Kindly refer to our FAQ for more information: https://fizz.ca/en/faq/what-is-an-unlocked-phone
Google Pixel devices are generally designed to allow bootloader unlocking. However, please keep in mind that modifying the phone's operating system may affect the performance of the mobile network on the device.
Thank you for your kind understanding.
Have a nice day!

Hi @Interested
See this FAQ for Fizz return policy. You could try it out and see how it goes, and if it is not to your satisfaction, return the phone.

All phones sold in Canada must be unlocked as required by the CRTC.
If you do choose Fizz, let us know how it goes with the GrapheneOS install.
Cheers,

The phone will be unlocked. The question isn't about sim locking through. Which is indeed no longer done in Canada after the CRTC banned it.
All phone have boot loader locked by default.
Yes, but, according to a web search, some carriers apparently block the option to unlock the bootloader in their carrier-specific firmwares. So, you wouldn't be able to install alternative OSs such as Graphene on such phones.
The question is, if Fizz does that on their phones they sell. I personally don't know, so somebody else has to give that answer. However, I know for a fact, that Vidéotron and all its sub brands have blocked the eSim (and thus the dual-sim) functionality on at least one phone model in the past. So, they are definitely meddling with phone features on some phones.

Hi, I don't see why a company would block a feature like the ESIM. The model you're talking about I think is the one that had a bug with the ESIM and it's the manufacturer that blocked it.

I had the phone both from Vidéotron and then from a competitor brand. The Vidéotron version was single physical sim, the same phone model from the competitor brand was dual sim, physical+esim.
Also, not a bug either, because Vidéotron branded marketing material made no mention of dual sim or eSim, while the competitors marketing did. So, this was very much intentional.
