Call forwarding question

Hello,

I'm traveling to Europe soon and plan to forward my Fizz mobile number to a Canadian VoIP number, which I will have access to in Europe via a VoIP app on my phone. However, Fizz's call forwarding instructions state the following:

Please note: it is impossible to forward a call when you are roaming outside Canada or the United States

I don't understand this. If I activate the forwarding before I leave the Fizz coverage area, and the forwarding target number is a Canadian number, why does it matter if I'll be roaming outside Canada or U.S.? This should be irrelevant and defeats the whole purpose of forwarding. Or am I hopefully misunderstanding this statement?

Thanks!

    Hi @cinergi
I don't agree with what is written on the FAQ. The call forward should wrong. But you need to activate from Canada before leaving, since it cannot be modified when you are there.
For example, it will work the call forward to a voicemail

For sure if you contact the support they will read the FAQ to you

It depends on the kind of call forward. There are conditional or unconditional forwards. Conditional forwards won't work because you have no service for calls outside of CAN & US. Unconditional forwards should work though as no attempt to contact your phone on incoming calls is even made when you have an unconditional forward set.
**21*+1xxxxxxxxxx*11# should do the trick. With all the x being your 10-digit Canadian destination number.

Thank you both. I intend to set up unconditional call forwarding via **21*.

    Hi there,
I have tried 6 times to forward my calls on Canadian number. One and the same answer - "Wrong MMI Code" , or "unexpected network error". My phone is LG Velvet 5G.

I did try phone settings - network error!

    It works here, no issues.

    • Are you still in Canada on the Fizz or Fizz EXT network?
    • Do you have unlimited talk in your plan or added enough money to your wallet to make a call?
    • If you have dual-sim, make sure your primary SIM for calls is set to the Fizz SIM before "dialing" the code.

You are getting that error as your phone (LG Velvet 5G) is not VoLTE "certified" by Fizz. As a workaround you can put your SIM card into a VoLTE "certified" phone and setup call forwarding. After that put your SIM card back to your phone LG Velvet 5G. If you want to stop calling forwarding, do the above workaround again.

    Here is another tidbit.

It only works when you are connected to an LTE/5G tower and your phone supports "USSDoLTE". USSD is what these codes are called to set up supplementary services such as call forwarding, call barring, call waiting, etc. The USSD implementation in LTE is completely different from what is used to be on GSM and UMTS networks. In LTE this is known as the Ut interface.

Now, it looks like, Fizz either never fully implemented USSD over GSM and UMTS or their system is flawed. It only works over the LTE Ut interface. To use the Ut interface, your phone must have support for it specifically for the Fizz network. This is similar to having support for VoLTE.

Since your phone is from 2020 and not on the list of supported VoLTE phones for Fizz, it probably is also not supporting the Ut interface on Fizz. That's why it is failing. If you have access to a more modern phone with full Fizz support, you may want to try setting it up through that phone. Once setup, it will continue to work even if you move the SIM card back to your phone.

You can also try *#21# on your phone, which a querying the current unconditional call forward configuration. I was able to run that successfully while connected to Fizz via 3G. However, it would just always say, "call forwarding not configured", regardless of the actual configuration entered through the Ut interface.
