Why do I have to pay for missed calls?

I noticed that every time I receive a call on my FIZZ number, even if I don’t answer, $0.12 is deducted from my wallet. Is this reasonable?

No, this should not happen. Are you subscribing to voicemail? Or did you ever have any call forwards enabled?

Try to completely disable call forwards, including to your voicemail if you have it.

    Dial the following code:

    ##002#

Then check again that the charge is no longer applied next time you receive an incoming call.

    Hi,
Pay per use calls, incoming or outgoing, are charged every minute since the call connects. So even if you don't pick up you are billed when it rings or a message is left. If you get or make a lot of calls, you can add unlimited calls to your plan which might be cheaper than pay per use.

As other people say, if someone leaves you a voicemail, it counts towards your minutes. If you have no minutes, it gets deducted from your wallet. I turned off voicemail and I buy an add-on every 2 months

I noticed this too and find it frustrating to be charged when no voice call (or voice mail) took place - especially for a spam call that I reject.

If you're using at least 30 mins every 2 months, the $3 add on is a better deal and can bring your cost down to 5 cents/min if you use all 60 mins.

I have unlimited calls but if I had pay-per-use and I got spam calls, I'd be pretty pissed.

Well, but it is up to you. Turn off the voicemail and any other call forward, and then you won't get charged if you reject or don't accept an incoming call. It's as simple as that. On the other hand, if you do send it to voicemail, then this is a service you requested and thus have to pay for. Either by the minute or by subscribing to an unlimited voice plan. Taking incoming calls incur air time charges in North America, it has always been done this way.

I, for one, am very happy that Fizz don't force me to pay for unlimited voice just to get a line, like every other provider in Canada does. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for this, one of Fizz' truly unique selling points.

I am also grateful that Fizz allows for such plan customization.

Unfortunately, I confirm Fizz has charged me, even when I don't answer a call. I don't have voice mail or other call forwarding set up. Like the OP's experience, Fizz starts charging from the moment the phone starts ringing, regardless if the call is picked up.

Hmm, I am sorry to hear that. That definitely should not happen.

Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce it. At my end, it works as expected.

    I've just tried both

    • letting a call go answered (letting it ring until it stops on its own)
    • actively rejecting a call so the caller will hear a busy signal

On both cases, my wallet was not charged. Then again, I have a phone plan, that neither includes unlimited voice nor does it include the voicemail feature. So, my calls can't go to any voicemail, not even accidentally, as no voicemail exists.

Also, in case I do make or take a call, my wallet is charged $0.11, not $0.12. As it should be. $0.10 + 13% Ontario HST is $0.113, which is correctly rounded down to $0.11.

Even if we are talking Québec, $0.10 + 5% GST + 9.975% QST is $0.114975, which still mathematically rounds down to $0.11.

By the way, some newer phones have a feature called "Call Screen", where your phone will automatically answer all incoming calls, funnel its contents into an AI, and decide whether they should start ringing or chuck the call off to spam. Check that you have that turned off, otherwise it would explain why you are being charged without having supposedly answered the call.

Check to make sure your phone doesn’t have call filtering or visual voicemail turned on on your phone.

Did you listen to the voicemail? If yes, it will use minutes.

This happened to me last month, even after blocking an unwanted number that called me a few times. That number hasn't called in a while (fortunately!) and more recently I bought the $3 60 min add on. I just tried to see what would happen with the add on, and calling but not picking up did not impact my minutes.

Regarding the cost, although a 1 min pay per use call is $0.11 with taxes in Ontario, it is $0.12 in Quebec, as GST and QST are separate line items.

The number of line items is irrelevant.

The TVQ (QST - Quebec Sales Tax) is added to the selling price (subtotal) of the goods or services excluding the GST.

Since January 1, 2013, the TVQ has not been compounded on top of the GST. Both taxes are calculated separately based on the pre-tax amount.

So, the combined tax rate is 14.975% as both the GST and TVQ are charged on the original selling price for a minute of airtime ($0.10). The total after-tax price is therefore $0.114975.

Thus, you guys in Québec are overcharged if you are paying $0.12.

True, but because they are separate line items, each is $0.01. Fizz can't combine them as it's not a harmonized tax like in Ontario.

Actually, I retract my last statement. If you round both tax amounts separately, you do indeed arrive at $0.12.
