Have you Sim with a lightning ?
Update your phone too!Yes, it has a red lightning.
Yes, my phone is dual sim asia version.
I thought it works with any voLTE phone as long as it supports the FIZZ frequency bands.

When 3G is shutting down, I cannot make/receive phone calls, but I'm still able to receive/send text messages and surf the internet, right?
Thank you

yes! Asia phone have normaly One frequency band for America of 4.

I am still confused why in IPhone settings in data options there is an option between LTE and 3G.
0 -
That’s only on iPhone 11 or earlier cause later phones have 5G
0 -
And as a result don’t have that setting
0 -
Who would willingly choose 3G over LTE network
0 -
Wait maybe it’s if you live in a bad signal area
0 -
And you use 3G to get a better signal cause 3G has better range right?
0 -
Someone let me know whether I’m right?
0 -
Hi, some providers in the past only supported 3G while others supported both. 3G performed better than 4G, which is better than 5G. However, 5G has better speed or latency under ideal conditions compared to older technology. It performs worse indoors.

It depends on the carrier and sim card you use. Apple merely changed the default, what settings are showing in the menu when their is no explicit carrier configuration for this. But, if a carrier explicitly configures it, the menu will show all the options, 5G, LTE or 3G.
Who would willingly choose 3G over LTE network
3G is a completely different network from LTE, with its own frequency bands and sometimes towers. You basically have two networks to choose from. This is contrary to 5G, which currently is merely an addon to LTE, broadcast from the same towers and configured not to run independently of an underlying LTE signal. When you have two networks, there may be some areas, where your LTE signal is bad enough that you barely get any data through, but your 3G signal is just fine. That's when you may choose to use 3G exclusively.

I just got to know that Samsung Note 9 doesn't have THE VOLTE!!!This phone is 2018 and discontinued. This means that even though it is technically capable of VoLTE, it is not receiving the correct configuration parameters (IMS profile) to operate on the Fizz network.
I can still make calls and receive calls, using my old Note9

Well, it's a rolling shutdown, some regions affected earlier than others. A good way for carriers to monitor its impact and take action as necessary.

Possible, but not for a long time.

I didn’t know that 5G and LTE had the same towers. Are you sure?

Are you sure?Yes, in many cases, 5G and LTE share the same cell towers. This means that a 5G signal is often emitted from the same physical location as LTE.However, 5G is not standalone in all situations: it sometimes relies on LTE to function, especially in non-standalone (NSA) configurations.

Thank you for the information. I didn’t know that!

It is not just Fizz but all providers trying to keep control since they were forced to sell unlocked phones.

I just bought a new Samsung A16 5G dual sim cellphone. But, no VoLTE icon for my Fizz or Rogers sim cards, because my phone is not Canada version cellphone....

I just activated my plan with an esim.
I called test number and it said it could not complete the call.
I was WTH.
I called back a few minutes later and it said I have VoLTE.
Still WTH.0 -

The problem is even if it worked on Fizz it might not work anywhere else.
More vendor lock in.
I hope someone can't move their phone and sues to fix this mess.0 -

Typically, phones that are not from North America do not have the correct frequencies. In clear terms, they have only one frequency out of four. So it's up to us to look into buying local phones with all the frequencies available here.

This is just another attempt to lock people in.North American 5G phone: very high probability of compatibility with all Canadian providers.
VoLTE: depends on the model, provider, and software configuration. (IMS)
This is where it can get tricky.

VoLTE technology and the withdrawal of the 3G network are the talk of the town, and rightly so. It’s not a topic that’s easy to understand. Our VoLTE FAQ has been updated, but we’ve put together some information for you below. If anything is unclear, we’re here to guide you through the transition.
A change that affects the entire telecommunications industry.
The withdrawal of the 3G network will start July 31, 2025, for Fizz and several of its partners. The decommissioning of this network, to be replaced by more advanced technologies, is an initiative undertaken by all mobile service providers in Canada. To find out more about the withdrawal of the 3G network in Canada, visit:
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) website
The Canadian Telecommunications Association website
Why does this concern me?
If your SIM card and/or your phone are not VoLTE (voice over LTE) compatible, no calls (including 911 calls) will go through when the 3G network is gone.Next steps.
Once the 3G network is withdrawn, the ability to make calls with VoLTE technology will depend on two things: your SIM card and your phone.Your SIM card:
A SIM card that is VoLTE-compatible will show a red lightning bolt. If that’s not your case, you should have received an email from Fizz inviting you to order your free VoLTE-compatible SIM card. If not, contact us by chat. Changing your SIM card for one that is VoLTE-compatible will not impact your plan or phone number.
Your phone:
The phone associated with your mobile plan must be VoLTE-compatible at Fizz. Here’s how to check:
Start by checking your SIM card (see higher up) to prevent the test for your phone from failing because of an incompatible SIM card.
While at home, make a call by dialling #TEST (#8378) from your mobile phone and listen to the voicemail.
-The message confirms your call went through the LTE network? Your phone is VoLTE-compatible at Fizz
-You hear another message? Your phone is not VoLTE-compatible at Fizz and must be replaced. The VoLTE function in your phone:
Make sure the latest manufacturer software update is installed on your phone, and activate its VoLTE function. Here’s how
All the phones available at Fizz.ca, new or Preloved, are VoLTE-compatible. You can also replace your phone with one you buy elsewhere. Make sure, however, to confirm it’s VoLTE-compatible at Fizz by calling #TEST (#8378).Important to know: Fizz does not block any phone.
Now, the question on everyone’s lips, why are certain phones VoLTE certified for some Canadian operators, but not for others. In fact, a mobile phone’s VoLTE certification is the result of a specific certification process between the manufacturer and the operator. That’s why Fizz can only guarantee the proper functioning of phones that both appear on its list and are purchased at Fizz.ca.
That being said, if you buy your phone elsewhere it could still have the VoLTE feature and be able to place calls on the LTE network. Fizz will not, under any circumstances, block or prevent the operation of VoLTE on a phone that hasn’t been certified by the company. If the phone is compatible with the Fizz VoLTE configuration, it will be able to make VoLTE calls. Complete the #TEST (#8378) to confirm.
There’s a lot of information out there about VoLTE, and it can be hard to make sense of it all. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you need help.
The Fizz team. Thanks for the comprehensive explanation.

I have Samsung A71 which is on fizz certified volte list, but was bought for Rogers. Just bought fizz SIM, activated a plan, but #8378 says can't make call. can I get volte provisioned instead of having to buy a new phone?0

Hi @fizzmore
Have you tried going to mobile network in settings and enabling the volte option? Or try turning the phone off and let it restart/reset to see if that would help. That worked for me. All the best €MMA.0 -

Try the app My Tech Suite and set the preferred network to LTE Only in Advanced Network Settings
I tried that the other day on a Pixel 9. Didn't work on the Fizz network, wouldn't register at all with 3G disabled. Fizz EXT did register, but not Fizz. Really odd.

Fizz EXT is partner...

You probably have really low signal from the Fizz network in that location.
I can only get LTE on Fizz-Ext at home.
Without that app I was connecting at 3G on Fizz.
I can manually register on Fizz elsewhere to get LTE.
I gave up on the automatic switching because it is always Fizz-Ext.0 -

Nope. Full bars LTE+ as soon as 3G is turned back on. It looks like 3G is used as an anchor or something. Doesn't really make sense. Just hope the behaviour changes before the big 3G shutdown.

If you force LTE and you reboot phone or active et disable airplane have you good signal ?
Send message to support ou @whizz with this problem of signal and where..

Send message to support ou @whizz with this problem of signal and where..
There is no problem with signal. Please read my posts
Anyway, it turns out that not only do I have to turn off 3G but also need to turn off VoLTE before the registration on the Fizz network starts failing. Still weird that it behaves that way.
But this is nothing any average user has to worry about.
I was trying to block all incoming calls to my Fizz number as I am not using the number, only data. I figured, disabling both 3G and VoLTE ought to do it and it does indeed. Unfortunately, with that side effect that I mentioned that the phone will then only register on Fizz EXT but no longer on Fizz.

Thanks for the help! I definitely have latest update on my A71, but unable to call #test all the time: "service is not available", I just assumed that it is VoLTE. But a couple of days ago, I noticed that when I call voicemail or some mobile numbers, there is no ringing tone playing in my phone, sometimes it was just connected after being silence for a while, sometimes it just disconnected. Calling landline phone or VOIP phone is OK. Not sure if it is related.

@fizzmore: It looks like, Samsung A71 uses different firmwares for different carriers, even in Canada. So, your Rogers firmware may not have the correct settings for Fizz. You may want to check your exact model number first, make sure, you do have the A71 hardware intended for Canada. Go to Settings -> System -> About phone -> Model number. It should say SM-A715W. If so, you may be able to get Fizz firmware from here: https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/archive/
However, cross-flashing it from Rogers to Fizz will not be trivial, requires fiddling with the phone's bootloader and installing potentially unsafe software on a Windows PC, will for certain factory reset your phone and may brick your phone altogether. Not recommend for any average user.0 -
Thanks for the info

how can I get a free volte sim card? based on "If you need to change your SIM card and you haven’t received a VoLTE SIM card by mail, contact us. One of our agents will confirm your address and send you one for free"
The robot chatting for support does not handle this!0 -

I started to suspect that there is carrier side configuration thing. Since I am able to call for now, I will just keep an eye on it until it stops working
