Is the Fizz modem Wi-Fi even capable of delivering the new highest speed of 940 Mbps?

I just switched to 400 Mbps and it seems I need to be fairly close to the modem to get the full speed of my plan. Actually, I get close to 450 Mbps, but I have to be standing next to the modem to get this speed. If I'm one floor up and standing almost directly on top of the modem, I can still get almost 450. My modem is in my basement which is not ideal, but most of the time I'm just one floor above. However, if I'm one floor above and I walk 10 ft away from the modem the speed falls off pretty dramatically. I also found that the speed drops off a lot if I'm body blocking the Wi-Fi signal, as in my body is in between the modem and the device that I'm using. Also, I believe the Fizz modem is not even Wi-Fi 6. So I'm wondering if Fizz now offers 940 Mbps are they going to offer an upgraded Modem with Wi-Fi 6 at least? Otherwise, I don't see how we can benefit from the 940 speed unless we purchase our own mesh Wi-Fi 6 setup.

The WiFi on their modem is not great, however if you go with your own router with the modem in bridge mode then you can use Wifi 5 as well — that is quite capable of doing gigabit over Wifi, you do not absolutely need a Wifi 6 router.

I think it's very difficult to get the max speed on any provider, especially on WiFi. Try to have only 1 device connected and see what speed you get. Then try to connect directly with an ethernet cable(probably not your phone) and see if you actually get close to the advertised speed.

    Hi @Fei

The wifi from the Fizz modem is an average one, if you need to have the 940Mbps and be able to use it, you need to use the device connected with the ethernet or to use your own router

That's the theoretical speed, connected by ethernet. Lots of factors affect speed.

    Hello @Fei

Wi-Fi 6 is not required in order to receive that particular speed. 😀 The speed is equally divided between the devices connected to the internet.

A Wi-Fi extender would be beneficial for the coverage issue; if it still persists after using an extender, please contact us directly by accessing this link and we will gladly assist you https://fizz.ca/en/support

    Thanks for your cooperation!
