Fizz EXT: How is "usage" on a partner network measured? Simply being connected to EXT? Data?

Hey! The service is great but I can only connect to Fizz EXT at home despite living in the green zone. How is Fizz EXT usage calculated? It is the amount of time connected to Fizz EXT regardless of whether or not you are actively using the connection? Is it number of calls/texts or the amount of data?

Thank you for any information you have!

    Hello everyone,
    Thank you for reaching out.

If your home address is the one you used during the subscription process, and it is within the green zone ( subscription zone ), then everything should be alright. You can verify the address here https://fizz.ca/en/coverage

As for your other question, from my knowledge, our partners will send us a report of your consumption if it exceeds a certain limit, and then a percentage is calculated based on your whole usage.

If you need more information on this matter, I would suggest contacting our customer service representatives privately, and they can also verify your address, see if it is within our subscription zone, and if you may be at risk of having the Fizz EXT service suspended.

You can also see the consumption from previous payment cycles if you go to My plans > Manage plan > Data Usage Reports.

    Have a good one!

    Hi @EXT_istentialcrisis

This seems to be a known problem https://fizz.ca/en/faq/partner-networks

The name of the network indicated on your phone will not initially say Fizz. Instead, you will see Fizz EXT. We are aware of this situation and are working to address it. Rest assured, your phone is not roaming, and you will not incur any charges. Simply restart your phone 72 hours (that’s 3 days) following the activation of your SIM card, and all will be in order.

It is the amount of calls, textes and data usage and not the time you are connected

Thank you for your reply @elena code xzi4t .

It did update to Fizz at work after a few days but it has been a couple of weeks and still Fizz EXT at home. Maybe a line of sight to the tower issue or my proximity to another provider's tower?

I am sorry, I still don't understand exactly how my Fizz EXT usage calculated. Is it the number of calls/texts, the call duration or the total amount of time on Fizz EXT for all voice, text and data combined? Is it weighted in favour of one of those three? Are they only going after heavy users or is it automated and there are no exceptions even for light users?

Keeping it very simple, am I cut off if the scenarios below repeat for 3 months (unlimited calls, texts and 30 GB data)?

    Scenario 1
Day 1: One hour phone call on Fizz EXT, no Fizz calls, text or data
Days 2-30: No usage at all.
100% of my usage was Fizz EXT. Is that is considered over 50% on partner network even if I use nothing else? If this is over, would a two hour phone call on Day 30 while connected to Fizz put me back to under 50%?

    Scenario 2
    100 texts on Fizz
    100 texts on Fizz EXT
    1.0 GB data on Fizz
1.1 GB data on Fizz EXT

    Scenario 3
    1 text on Fizz
    1000 texts on Fizz EXT
    10.0 GB data on Fizz
1.1 GB data on Fizz EXT
    What percent is Fizz EXT?

    Cheers!

    Hi @EXT_istentialcrisis

Check the map https://fizz.ca/en/faq/subscription-area-and-coverage-area to be sure that your home is in the green area, if this is the case the problem is the tower configuration, and you don't need to worry. But if you registered the phone line with your home address, this means that you are in the subscription area (the green one).

I really don't know who they calculated the 50% of the usage, if it is weighted (for example the data is more important of texts) or if it is at least one or all of them.

I would actually like to know the answer to this as well.

    Good morning,

This can be a very technical problem for us users to solve.

I live just inside a green area, which wraps around my city and just beyond its edges and am frequently on ext when at home. Other times I move closer to the edge of the green zone and I am on the Fizz network.

Mobile phone handoff from tower to tower is complicated stuff, dependent on the frequencies of the tower and the phone, signal strength etc.

Several apps I have tried are inconsistent in their reporting of towers, who owns them and their locations.

Fizz “reserves the right” but does not say too much ext use results in automatic action.

My best guess is that if it comes down to it, Fizz could analyze usage from its partner networks, down to the cell tower level, and determine whether or not that area is in their green zone or not. If it is, I can’t see how they would blame their customer.

I realize this does not answer your specific question about exactly how 50% is calculated, but I hope this info has been somewhat useful.
