Fizz Mobile LTE Speeds. High ping.

Before I begin I want to make clear that Fizz LTE is working fine on my phone. I can load YouTube videos, do WiFi calls, etc. with no issues at all. Videos buffer perfectly and WiFi calls are crystal clear.

I live in Metro Vancouver and recently signed up with Fizz. I followed the instructions of:

Manage my plan > Advanced parameters > Fizz network parameters > Send to my phone (I'm an Android User).

I downloaded and installed the network parameters. I also selected my network operator on my phone as Fizz. I've also rebooted my phone, fully shutdown my phone, etc.

I was able to get my download speed up to about 60 MB/s and download to 10 MB/s on a good run on the Shaw Speed Test. My best result ever was 80.5 MB/s with 9.6 MB/s upload. I also had a 74.7 MB/s and 10.1 MB/s upload.

On a bad run, I'll get 30 MB/s download and 2 MB/s upload.

The ping is almost always around 150 or 160 ms.

I also notice the server it usually connects to doing the Shaw Speed Test is either in Winnipeg or Montreal instead of Vancouver. Even if I force it to connect to Vancouver, the ping is still around 160 ms.

My questions are as follows:

1. What download and upload speeds are normal for LTE? Is there anything I can do to make it faster than 80 MB/s download and 10 MB/s upload?

2. Why am I connecting to Winnipeg instead of Vancouver by default? If I use my WiFi it will always automatically connect to Vancouver, Victoria, or Kelowna (all near by cities).

3. Why is the ping around 160 ms? Is this normal for LTE? Is there a way to get this lower? On WiFi my ping is around 17 ms.

4. Is Fizz going to be improving their mobile data services in the Metro Vancouver area any time soon? Any estimates on when this will occur? Currently switching to Fizz for my Home Internet is not available in Metro Vancouver but I believe it is available in Eastern Canada.

5. Will Fizz soon be offering Home Internet in Metro Vancouver?

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help!

    Hi @ArtVandelheizen

    1. The speed depends on too many factors, congestion, quality of the signal, phone (for example) 80Mbps is not bad, I believe that is good
    2. That depends from the routing decide by Fizz
    3. I believe that this is high and you can get problem with real time application such as VoIP
    4. For sure they will improve, they are exiting from beta, but they still have some work to do

    Hello ArtVandelheizen,
Thank you for becoming a Fizz mobile user.
I kindly wish to inform you that the LTE speed depends on some factors, like signal, proximity to a cell tower, device used, network selected etc.

From what I can see, you are obtaining normal results as mobile data can have a speed from 3 Mbps to even 100 Mbps however on average this stays at approximatively 30 Mbps.

Your phone is connected automatically to the best option available in that area.

If our partners are having more coverage in an area, your phone will select the strongest one.
Regarding the other questions, for the internet there are no news for the moment therefore, in case we will expand to more areas, the information will be posted online.

As for mobile, since the expansion started recently and we are constantly verifying the possible issues, rest assured we will make the necessary to offer best services in whole areas.

In case you are having other questions, you can contact our customer services agents and they will assist you.
To do that, all you need is to access this link: https://fizz.ca/en/support
    Have a great day.
