Infrequent lag spikes

Hi all,

I had my Fizz internet installed in June and this issue has been present since then. Prior to Fizz, I had a videotron business connection (100mbps) with a Technicolor TC4400 modem and before that Teksavvy (400mbps) also with a Technicolor TC4400 modem. I never had any issues with these connections.

I like to game in the evenings, since installing Fizz I will get 2-3 lag spikes per 20ish min MOBA game where the entire game stops simulating but I can still receive animations and command acknowledgements of my input. I've noticed similar spikes in other games but this one is the most obvious due to the network model.

Restarting the modem helps for the evening but the problem will return by the next day.

I finally managed to catch the issue on https://packetlosstest.com/

This seems to be the problem (this test was 3mins long - 65 pings per second). Theres quite a bit of packet loss and a massive latency spike right afterwards.

This one is particularly unstable (3 mins long, 30 pings per second) but it was very hard to produce this result - I can tell you I've had games where it felt like something like this was happening:

I saved off the CSV results of these tests along with another (see attached).

Any ideas for how to fix this? Anyone else have this problem?

    Hello Anthony R. 64523,

I am sorry to hear about this situation.
I have verified your connection and some of the signals were not within normal values within the past few days.
I would recommend testing the manipulations from this FAQ https://fizz.ca/en/faq/my-wi-fi-network-cutting-how-do-i-fix-it and if the issue still persists please contact our support team.

    Have a lovely day,
    -Alex

Unfortunately, unless Fizz changes their choice of modem, I don't think there is much that can be done.

The CODA-4680 uses the Puma 7 chipset which is known to under certain conditions cause jitter and high latency. This is nothing new unfortunately. Many gamers often complain about this issue. This is not usually a big issue for the average non-gamer, but quite obvious if you game. There have been others complaining about the exact same problem lately. HERE is another one (in French). They are like micro-spikes. And they also mention that a modem reset fixes it for the night, but comes back the next day or so.

You can read a little about it HERE. It affects a pile of modems based on the Intel Puma 6 and 7 chipsets.

I would also love if Fizz would give us the option of using a TC4400 modem (which they can offer as an option for purchase for anyone that does NOT need routing/wifi options in an all-in-one device). ie: If you have your own router, get a TC4400 (which is DOCSIS3.1 and already on the videotron network by many other ISP), if you don't have a router, you can opt for the CODA-4680 if you prefer.

IF customer service finds some miraculous solution, PLEASE let us know, I'm sure many are interested. But I would not hold my breath.

  • Thank you @Whizz I am reaching out to support now. Hopefully a technician can solve the issue.

  • @Emporium Thank you so much for this detailed response. Yeah that was sadly what I figured. What I find strange is that my friend does not have the issue - but maybe he has ideal conditions at his location? We both live in Montreal, I'm in the Plateau while he is downtown (near Place D'Arms). This building is from 2012, so the wiring should be good (and a tech did a test last time and it all looked good).

Contacting support today they reset it twice and asked me to do a factory reset. I'll continue to monitor the situation but as it stands I will likely be moving away from Fizz for internet if this cannot be solved. Bummer!
