What is the USB port on the back of the modem router for?

There is a USB port on the back of the modem router - what is it for? Is it for hooking up a shared file server of some sort?

The short answer is yes, the usb is to add an external (usb)  hard drive or usb key (flash drive) to share files over the network.

Nice .. It is becoming more and more common to have a usb port for a Network storage.
Cudos to Fizz for having that on there modem. Now if they'll just expand to my area I can switch over to Fizz for my internet too :)

You can attach a harddrive or usb and then access the files from all devices on the network.

    Hi Douglas,
Thank you you for your question.
Your gateway provides one USB 3.0 host port, supporting Network Attached Storage (NAS) functionality and allowing you to plug in an external hard drive or a USB flash disk for mounting and sharing through the LAN interfaces via the Samba protocol (network neighborhood). This protocol may require different steps to enable it, depending on the operating system installed on your device.
It supports the following Windows file systems:
    FAT16
    FAT32
    Have a good one!
    Radu
