Last year, there were discounts on permanent plan prices (aside from temporary Discovery discounts), specifically the 25 GB for $25 was pretty good. The initiative came from competitors though which Fizz matched eventually about a week or two after Black Friday if I remember correctly.
If they did that again, I might take it this year with unlimited calling and host my primary number at Fizz. Now that there is WiFi Calling that would allow the number to be used globally on WiFi, regardless of roaming agreements.
So, Fizz, see what you can do :)

That's great! Fingers crossed! My understanding though is that WiFi calling isn't available internationally. According to this page: "The service is available in Canada and the United States with an eligible plan. A Canada/US plan is required when using the service in the United States. The service is not currently available overseas."

Well, the same FAQ also claims that a benefit of WiFi calling is to "reduce roaming charges". How can it do that if it isn't available anywhere where you would be roaming? The FAQ completely contradicts itself.
It also says that "Wi‑Fi Calling will be deducted from the minutes included in the plan, which may result in additional charges if those minutes are exceeded." Have you seen any such Fizz plan that "include minutes"? Either it's unlimited or zero.
Doesn't look like, anything that shows up in a Fizz FAQ can be considered pure gold… :)

and did my best to fake my location without actually leaving my living room. Couldn't get the Wi-Fi Calling to stop working regardless from where I appeared to connect from. On an Ontario-only plan.

Would be great if Fizz offers a plan that can compete with those prepaid providers. I'd love to have a plan that is suitable for parents who use phone just for a bit of web surfing (e.g. Google maps) and emergency calls.

What are "those" prepaid providers? Annual plans? Outside of Quèbec, Fizz can almost compete with it. For $16 you get unlimited calls + 1 GB. An annual plan is only slightly cheaper, but doesn't offer the same month-to-month flexibility that Fizz does.
Plus, if they ever do need more data, you can pimp up their data from your own plan by gifting.
