What Are Your Best Tips for Planning a Stress-Free Move?

Moving to a new home always seems to involve more small tasks than expected. I’m curious what everyone here does to make moving day less stressful.

I’d start with the practical things early, including changing the address, arranging internet service at the new place, sorting belongings, and confirming the moving date. For a larger relocation from Calgary to another province, I’d also compare a few long distance moving companies Calgary before booking, especially when the move falls around a busy date.

What is one moving tip you learned from experience that you would recommend to someone preparing for their next move?

We had to reserve the elevator in the new condo at least 7 days in advance of the moving, thus a rather spontanous moving was impossible. Luckily we had 2 weeks of overlap renting the old and the new condo. Those 2 weeks overlap reduced our moving stress significantly!

    Hi @erinmontgomery

Take the opportunity to declutter while moving. Decide whether you are going to move part of your belongings. If so, clearly label the contents of the boxes and the room where they should go. Enlist the help of family and friends if possible—and throw a great party once the move is over.

It sounds like you already have a lot of things under control. I made a list of everywhere to notify for the new address. For my last move I used professional movers rather than just relying on friends. It was money well spent. I also took off the week before and after my move which made it less stressful for last minute packing before and then getting settled in after the move.
