Warning! LTE coverage travelling in the USA is unreliable

I just returned from travel in the States. I have a Canada + us plan. I was looking forward to seamless coverage. Data works ok. Texting works ok, nearly always. The problem is with voice service. Fizz implements voice roaming via LTE ("long term evolution". I looked it up). You need a phone that is VoLTE compatible ("voice over LTE". I surmised that one). My phone is compatible. This service doesn't work reliably. When it does work, there is a good chance the quality is low and the call will be dropped. Most of the time, your call simply cannot be connected. Especially frustrating when the phone displays, supposedly, that it is on a LTE carrier. Fizz knows this, since its suggested workaround is to use WhatsApp. Not helpful if you're trying to call a number not connected to Whatsapp, such as a hotel, a mechanic, etc, etc.
This is less a question, more a request that fizz invest the money to permit voice roaming be carried on the actual voice network directly, and not this cheapo, non-functional scheme.
I'd pay more for the option, if that's what would be necessary. But definitely not $15/day like Rogers. That's a big reason I switched.
Fizz, a public reply about the action you're willing to take would be appreciated. A similar message, directly to me would also be appreciated.

Hello Methuselah_1491,
Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experience with us.
I’ve taken some time to review your account and wanted to follow up with a few important details that may help clarify the issues you encountered with voice service while in the U.S.
To ensure a fully functional voice experience when roaming in the U.S., there are three key factors that must be in place:
Permission for your phone to use mobile data while roaming – Ensuring this setting is enabled is also critical for calls to connect properly. For more details on this, you can check this FAQ: https://fizz.ca/en/faq/some-calls-when-us-do-not-work-why
VoLTE-compatible SIM card – I’ve verified that your SIM card is indeed VoLTE-compatible, so you're all set on that front.
A VoLTE-certified phone with Fizz – This is an essential piece. From my verification, I see you're using a Motorola One 5G Ace, which unfortunately is not on Fizz’s list of certified devices. While your phone may support VoLTE generally, only devices certified by Fizz are guaranteed to support all necessary voice functionalities while roaming. You can find the full list of certified phones here: https://fizz.ca/en/faq/compatible-devices#3
I hope I was able to provide some insight into the situation for you.
Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any more questions at https://fizz.ca/en/support
Have a nice day.

Good morning @Methuselah_1491
Sorry to hear you had this trouble. I drove to Florida and back to central Canada in the early winter of 2025 and had no issues at all with voice calls.
I suspect what you are experiencing is that in Canada, the 3G network has not yet been shut down, whereas in the USA the 3G network has been shut down.
You mentioned that your phone is VoLTE compatible, but did not specify it is is approved by Fizz. Would you kindly check to see if your phone is approved by Fizz?
Cheers,

I am also on the Canada US plan and have not had any issues with the service while in the US.
I would do as Brad suggested and make sure that your phone is on the list of Fizz compatible devices.0 -
I didn’t face any issues when I travelled last year. Have you tried selecting manual network in US? Sometimes that works.
