I might be a party pooper, but I think its an electoral measure that will not net positive globally for citizens. Taxes will be raised elsewhere to balance the books, and also doing this on the GST for a relatively small period of time is going to be complex from an IT and logistic perspective, which will nullify some of its advantages.
Just a personal opinion though. Good for those who think they will benefit, but globally I think its net negative for average citizens.

I totally agree. It is mostly a way to get more votes.

Yeah. That is just another way to get votes.

Indeed, but somehow it seems to have failed again hahaha…. or so it feels. There seems to be backlash more than appreciation so far

Agree 100%

Yes especially for the 250$ it failed hard lol

I usually only buy essentials from supermarket. I seldom pay GST most of the time. Personally, I hope cleaning supplies can be added to the GST free list.

Yes, essential items must be prioritized; food and cleaning supplies

The restaurant I usually goes simply just hikes their menu price.

yikes… that's not cool

He is taking advantage of the situation, I would go to his competitor across the street if there is one

I think it's just them trying to get votes in the next election. It won't make much difference. There's no tax on food anyways except for junk food. Most people eat a meal that was tax free in the first place at Xmas.
In terms of gifts like toys. Many people already purchased their Xmas gifts so they don't get anything.
In my case, it won't make any difference anyways.
But if others feel it really helps them, enjoy while you can! 😊

I guess after the GST is back, the higher price will stay.

Loblaws replaces Provigo with Maxi, they want to make smaller surfaces

Loblaws has significant share of the Canadian grocery market and they are still expanding.

I still can't believe how little competition there is in Canada….

The grocery store I usually go is incredibly busy so I guess they don't need to think about competitions.

Yes their latest move is to bring T&T, I've never been yet but it must be quite an experience

I think GST relief can be really helpful, especially for people who are struggling with rising costs. It’s a good way to make things like groceries or other essentials a bit more affordable.
That said, I feel like it works best if it’s targeted—like giving relief to those who need it most or cutting taxes on essential items. It’s great for short-term help, but in the long run, I think we also need other measures, like higher wages or better support for basic needs, to really make a difference.
