Is 5G coming or no?

4G LTE+ is just as fast as the lower frequencies of 5G. I doubt that you would even see a difference on your phone.
4G LTE uses VoLTE for calls and 5G uses VoNR. Again I doubt that you could tell the difference in call quality between the two.
For now the 4G LTE+ is still very close to 5G.
Also VoLTE supports CSFB ( Circuit Switched Fallback to 3G/2G) where as VoNR doesn't.

Good morning @BeakBird
THANK YOU for the excellent info. I frequently travel to rural areas where I need to have voice service for emergency service, so the “CSFB” is important to me.
My question is, although the answer may be implied, if a carrier adopts 5G, do they have to disable the other technologies, or can they remain and switch back and forth?

We don't have any information concerning this for the moment. We are still waiting.

Nothing has been annnounced yet.Why would you need 5G anyway? I think for most people LTE is enough.

Hi.
When a carrier adopts 5G, they do not have to disable other technologies like 4G or 3G. These technologies can coexist, allowing devices to switch between them as needed.

But they will to reduce cost. see US

Definitely. 3G will be shut down in Canada by the end of 2025.

Hopefully, sufficient 4G or better coverage will be set up before then :-)

Anyway you can prepare yourself buying a 5G phone from Fizz.

4G has some low frequenciy bands in the 700 and 800 MHz range which can cover large areas.
5G also has lower frequencies (Low-band 5G) which operate below 1GHz and can cover large areas.
So lower frequencies in rural areas needing less towers to cover larger areas.
Higher frequencies in urban areas to offer more bandwidth for heavily populated areas needing more towers to compensate for range limitations.

I have an iPhone 12 so I am good to go. It was the rural service I was curious about as in, if they disable 3G with nothing else to replace it.
Thanks again for the detailed info.
