Volte call question Fizz to Fizz-EXT and reverse

Hello. I'm in Niagara Ontario. Newish subscriber, 5 weeks.

I live near the edge of fizz network and where fizz-ext only area would be. I am well within the subscription area.

My question is if calls will drop if I drive from my house while on the Fizz network and then drive away slightly to the south where that network ends and Fizz-EXT takes over.

And vice versa.....

Will transition be rough?

I am still on only Fizz-EXT yet though,.so have not had an issue.

good question. i'm not at an area where i can test this easily. when its not a call, the switch is pretty seamless for me. when I'm using data it's not noticeable. i suspect it might if you are on the call? should confirm with support or test it. have you restarted your phone since you joined? 5 weeks should be enough to switch to the fizz network

    Thanks @wenhan

I know it may eventually switch, and I restart my phone every few days. No luck yet.

Im very curious to find out about calls dropping. With volte I would think there may be a chance it's seamless, or nearly so.

Waiting to find out because I want to switch my wife over to Fizz.

    Hi @Fredweet

I have been trying, without success,to find the regulation that speaks to this issue.

My good friend worked on this file (handoff of calls from carrier to carrier) at a telco years ago and assures me that a telco must take the call from a competitor and not give it a lower priority.

There is though, hard and soft handoffs.

A soft handoff is when the cell phone prepares to switch cells by deciding which of the available cells, in advance, is best to use for the handoff, and this process is unlikely to be noticed.

A hard handoff is when there is only one cell to handoff to (remote areas). In this case, although the handoff time is extremely short, you may notice it. There is also a higher chance of a dropped call with a hard handoff.

So to answer your question, if your call drops, the most likely scenario is that your entered an area with only one cell tower available.

    Cheers,

    Brad

    Hello @Fredweet ,
    Thank you for your post.
If your phone selects automatically the network, your calls should not drop if you are travelling in an area where Fizz EXT is available.
You can verify this by accessing your phone settings.

The steps may differ from one phone model to another however here are two examples:

    AndroidSettings → Connections → Mobile networks → Network operators → Search networks → Automatic/Fizz

    iPhoneSettings → Operators → Automatic/Fizz

In case you will encounter issues, please contact our customer service agents as they are available at any hour and they will be able to assist.
For that, you can use this link: https://fizz.ca/en/support
    Your understanding is appreciated.

    Have a great day.
