WhatsApp "We couldn't send an SMS to your number"
Hi!
I have an iPhone. Afterthe iOS17 update I reset my phone and restored from backup. Since then, I cannot use WhatsApp. No matter what option I choose to verify, it does not work. The most common verification, using my correct phone number that is on my phone, returns "We couldn't send an SMS to your number."
I have done all of the basic troubleshooting including,,
Restart phone
Uninstall, reinstall WhatsApp
Disable Wifi and try on celluar
Disable Cellular and try on WiFi
Reset phone again
Checked all settings for WhatsApp
I also contacted WhatsApp who told me to do all of the above, which I had explained in my original contact to them I had already done.
The only thing I haven't done is contact Fizz to verify my APN settings are configured correctly. And before I do, I want to know if that is an actual useful troubleshooing step and not WhatsApp trying to do as little as possible. Also, has anyone else had this problem before?
Thanks,
Warren

Hi
it seems that WhatsApp thing that your number is not a mobile one

Which is weird. I have been using WhatsApp for years with the same number accross various phones and SIM cards.

I agree with you, but why they give you that message right away? Usually if you have problem receiving it whatsapp should not have a feedback but only a timeout.
Can you try to switch the network operator to fizz ext
The iPhone you need to update the carrier settings and not the APN

I reset the network and tried again, no change.
I responded to WhatsApp, and their response is to contact Fizz.
So WhatsApp is being useless but I have difficulty understanding if Fizz can or would be able to fix this.

Can you try the SIM in a different phone?
Check if in the message you have any filter like the anti spam

Negative. I don't have any spares.
This all started after I reset my phone following the iOS17 update. Should not be related, but I suspect some Apple foolishness here as well.

I checked on mine (but I dont have whatsapp)
Check the Filter Unknown senders is off
and I will try to disable iMessage

One of the first things I did was disable iMessage (I have since re-enabled it).
Filter Unknown Senders has always been disabled.

Thanks. I followed those steps but same results. Also WhatsApp has put a 24hr delay on the next time I can call for a code (which has not worked either).

Update... I contacted Fizz support who offered some extra steps.
I reseated my SIM card (I had alreayd reset network settings).
No change. They suggested I contact Apple.
I escalated back to WhatsApp.

WhatsApp asked me for my phone number, then they asked for a video showing the behaviour, then they asked me to do the basic troubleshooting all over again. So they are utterly useless at supporting their product.

After reading, I believe that the problem caused by WhatApp, the same thing happened to me a year ago. No solution for me .Just changed phone number

It's not easy to change numbers with everyone you call

I know it's not easy to change number but not using WhatsApp. I use face book messager instead

You use Facebook messenger.
Depending on who I'm talking to, I'm using iMessage, Facebook, or WhatsApp. My in-laws use WhatsApp exclusively, which means I can no longer communicate with them. Ultimately this problem is WhatsApp, but since they have billions of users they don't care if they lose one to a bug.

I couldn't agree more with you, they don't really care

The problem kind of fixed itself. I still get the SMS error message but the code from a voice call finally worked after I waited a few extra seconds before entering the code (the code was always rejected with a non sensical message). WhatsApp support has asked me for the same information over and over again and repeats the same procedures over and over again. They make Bell and Comcast support look spectacularly good in comparison. I hope no one must contact WhatsApp support. If it weren’t for so many people that I talk to using WhatsApp exclusively I would drop it like bad habit.
