Anyone with 873 can't receive a call from Ottawa landlines?
I move my number to fizz 6 weeks ago and just realized that the building I live cannot call me from their landlines. I tried calling myself using the university lines and none of them work either. The message was "You are trying to dial the long distance number..." and not forwarding it anywhere.
I did try put 1 in front of the number and it says "Please check the number..."
I did the same thing on my husband number that's 819 and the call goes through easily.
I switched the sim card with my husband's so it's not the phone problem.
I tried contact fizz ( a lot ) and keep receiving the email answer that it's the landlines' fault that I need to contact my operator (contact the university operator, or Minto buildings' operator??)
One of the message that I got from Fizz said that “I would like as well to know if the call passes after this message, as most of the time, this message is recorded on our network for any call towards a number with an area code that has recently been registered, but there should be no issue in placing those calls. ”
As my quick wiki google says, 873 was added September 15, 2012. Even before Fizz??
How do I make my number accessible from the landline again? Move back to Bell? Will I receive money back for this month that I paid? Anyone with 873 can tell me if your phone is working?

I believe Fizz is correct, in that it is a landline problem at the source.
I had a similar problem where I could not call my wife's number from work. Same problem, long distance call annouunced, then when using a +1, saying not to use a +1 prefix. Had my IT guys fix it and all is well now. Likely same thing at your university. Call IT.

Then it should be the same for 819 ? Same area code, different numbers?12

Warisa: here is how you should check if the problem is with Fizz or the landlines.
you need another 873 number and use it to call the building or have the building call you.
I have been using a free app called Textnow. It gives you a free phone number with an area code of your choosing. You can use it to call Canadian and US numbers for free. When you are signing up, pick the 873 area code. Use this number on the Textnow app to test with the building or with the Ottawa U landlines. If the calls go through, the problem is not with the landlines, it must be with Fizz.12 -
@ Fling:
Even with the Quebec plan, she should be able to receive calls from any number as long as she is in Quebec and Ottawa.
She should be able to call Quebec and Ottawa numbers when she is in Quebec and Ottawa.11 -
Canada plan.
"I kindly ask you to get in contact with your local landline provider to investigate this issue."
I don't even have a landline operator.
I asked Fizz to try calling me from local 613 line and no one did. They can't even call me themselves and yet, it's not Fizz problem.11 -
@ Warisa:
Fizz deals with customers only online or via email.
Please try the Textnow test I suggested to you earlier. It is quick10 -
I got the textnow but I have no landline to call. Have to go to university and asked them to try calling me.11

Warisa,
Eder's idea about the text now application is a very good idea.10 -
@ Warisa: how about the building you live in, do they have a landline? if yes, give them a call with your Textnow number and ask them to call you back so that you can do the testing.10

I did and they can call Textnow number. 873500xxxx but not my Fizz number.
Now what?
The ticket is closed by fizz, they don't even reply to me anymore.10 -
This is a proof that landlines can call an 873 number with another provider but can't call an 873 number from Fizz. Therefore the problem is not from the landlines but very likely from Fizz. You should chat again with Fizz equipped with this test and ask them to open the ticket again.11

Yes I don't think the whole university never call 873 before.
Thank you very much Eder for you suggestion. I sent them this post so I hope they will reply with something better than "check you landline operator"10 -
I live in the Ottawa/Gatineau area as well.
The 873 (for Gatineau) and 343 (for Ottawa) area codes are becoming more and more popular as the 613 and 819 area codes are kind of saturated. I am sure U of O has called the 873 and 343 numbers before.10 -
Very good ides from Eder....4
