Is there a "preferred" network connection?
While I'm at home I can use my Bell internet for data usage via the phone. Is there an option to use this connection rather than the 1GB data usage I'd use when out of range of my home network, or is this automatic? I don't want to use up my 1GB Fizz allowance when I've got an unlimited connection available...

If you have the Wifi configured yes it will be used automatically.
I will suggest you to disable all the update using the mobile data, probably also the video from youtube, and all other applications.
The way to do depend from the phone11 -
Just like Mike said, try to disable all the automatically updates and this stuff and try to put your wireless connection as automatically!11

i'm not sure if there is a "preferred" network connection.
Which phone are you using?
You can manually disable mobile data when you expect to be using wifi.
To be safe, you can also limit your data usage by turning on Data Saver and restrict/limit usage.

The phone is a Motorola G6. I have enabled Data Saver as suggested, but see no way to configure updates to be done via the home wifi. The home wifi connects automatically when I walk in the house so that works properly.
Thank you all for your prompt and informative replies! I hope to be able to return the favour some day!9 -

On the iPhone all you got to do is to turn off this option after connecting to your home’s wifi8

Dennis said he has an Android phone.
Good try SittingRam. Still your message is important for iPhone owners as that Wifi Assist feature can eat up your data in no time. without user's knowledge. It seems Apple thinks everyone has a large or unlimited data plan. Apple should make regional settings, so that Canadian users can save their (world-wide most expensive) data when we need to use it.
