Provincial Only Plan

How come someone who has the provincial plan only as their plan, not Canada wide, they can still have access to the internet when they are in another province than where they reside and the plan they have with? I was told that if I have the provincail plan, I wouldn't be able to access my data in another province. They are paying less for having the provincial only plan but have the same access as someone who has the Canada wide plan. What is the point of paying more for the Canada Wide plan if you can get the same service with the pronvincial only plan? Thank you.

Hi, you can get out of zone service for either calls or data with pay-per-use Wallet or addon no matter the plan you have.

    good evening @Rad_JPIM4

Here is the FIZZ FAQ on the topic. Point #3 explains that you will have data access in Fizz's national "coverage area". Where you are subscribed is irrelevant. Some users report that Fizz will send you a notice if you start to consume too much data outside of your subscription area. I have never had a problem with that.
The good news is you can change you plan anytime. The changes will take affect on your next billing cycle.

    Thanks @BradDoell
So what is the point of getting the national plan if you can get the provincial plan and not be charged for data use or making a call? Eg you have a Quebec only plan. You go to Alberta and you can use your phone without any fees.
It says that if you use data outside your area or make a call, you will be charged. But people are not charged.

Point#4 from your link above: The mobile data included in your plan must be used when you are within your coverage area. Outside your coverage area, you must buy an Add-on or add funds to your Fizz wallet to pay per use.

I don't understand why people who have the provincial only plan are not charged.

I know that. But they have a provincial plan. Eg Quebec and they DO NOT have the pay-per-use or add on.

What I'm asking is why they have the provincial plan only, yet they can go anywhere in Canada and use their phone and data without any extra cost.

For example: They have a Quebec only place. This means they can make calls and use data in Quebec at no cost. But if they go to Alberta, and they use data or call, there should be a cost but the person is not being charged at all for being outside their coverage area. And they did not add anything in their wallet. No add-ons, nothing.

Why have a national plan if you can have a provincial only plan and get the exact same service with no extra cost? You actually pay less and get the same coverage.

As per Fizz FAQ: The mobile data included in your plan must be used when you are within your coverage area. Outside your coverage area, you must buy an Add-on or add funds to your Fizz wallet to pay per use.

See, it says that they have to Add-on but the preson I know does not Add-on anything. He doesn't pay anything except his monthly provincial only plan.

    There are several options.

    • You can buy a travel-addon "Canada" to get out-of-province data.
    • If you are in Ontario or Québec, you can add money to your wallet and use pay-as-you-go data when out of province.
    • If you have a Québec plan, you also have coverage in the Ottawa area, I believe anywhere where you would still be on the Vidéotron network rather than on the Freedom Mobile network. Should also include Ontario shore of Ottawa river towards Montréal.

Unfortunately, the other way around, being on an Ontario plan in Ottawa, is much less customer-friendly. In fact, I was staying at a hotel in downtown Ottawa recently, and my Fizz data kept cutting out about half of the time. And that is after first eating through my entire wallet money on both of my cards without warning. So, thank you, Fizz, for a "feature" so poorly designed. Why you ask? Because downtown Ottawa is right next to the river and of course your phone also connects to Québec towers broadcasting from right across the river if their signal is stronger. Which was billed as using data out-of-province on my Ontario plans, even through I never set foot into Québec once during the entire trip. And of course, there is no option to limit the phone to Ontario towers since it is both the same network.

In other words, if you are in Ottawa or close to the Ottawa river, DO NOT go for an Ontario-only plan, it won't work. Pretty ridiculous from Fizz not to include the first line of towers on the north side of the Ottawa river into the Ontario coverage area.

I was told that if I have the provincail plan, I wouldn't be able to access my data in another province.

That is correct. With the exceptions listed above.
