Can esim be installed when out of country ?
Hello!
I’ve got family flying in from overseas for the holidays and I’m wondering about Fizz eSIMs.
Can they set up/install their Fizz eSIM before they travel (while they’re still abroad), so that it’s ready to go as soon as they land here?
I don’t expect them to be able to actually use the service until they arrive, but ideally everything would be installed already and they’d just have to turn on/activate the eSIM when they get off the plane at the airport.
Has anyone done this before? Does it work fine?

Fizz is not recommended for short term usage and I don't think it's possible to use it for foreign users. To be a Fizz client you need to have a valid Canadian address and a Canadian credit/debit card. The billing address should be the same as for your credit/debit card.

If you end up doing that, make sure they don't enable roaming and esim cards in advance, as it could use up funds you have in your wallet for out of service zone data.

If they are coming from overseas, I doubt that they have "their Canadian address and payment method".
As a workaround @SB_ can add them to his account or create a new account(s) by using his address and credi/debit card.

Yeah, that's what I meant.

You would likely need to get the plan(s) on your account so it has a Canadian address and method of payment. Once your plans are set up, you can send your family members the info fizz will give you for the eSIM(s).
They’ll be able to install the sim before getting to Canada. As mentioned by others, just make sure data roaming is disabled before they get in the country

The plan need be active before they can use it.

No, you can't install esim out of country without setup it already.

Be careful though, data roaming is typically a per-sim setting on dual sim phones. So, you can't actually set it for a new eSim until after the eSim has been successfully installed on the phone. Make sure to do the eSim activation on a stable WiFi connection and, once complete, check the data roaming setting for that new eSim before taking the phone off the WiFi.
Technically, in general, you can activate an eSim from anywhere in the world as long as you have a stable data connection, but carriers may choose to "secure" eSim activations by geoblocking IP addresses they find "suspicious". I couldn't tell you if Fizz is doing that though, you would just have to try.
If it fails, you'd have to deal with ordering a replacement eSim through Fizz and potentially Fizz customer service who may also flag repeated orders for eSim replacements as suspicious. Think about if it is really worth it. Airports have free WiFi for your family to communicate with you when they arrive, it might be easier just to activate the sims once you meet them at the airport.

Thanks for the idea, however payment never been an issue in the past. Each time they come for a 2-3 month we took a physical sim with an account we have for them. Just though it would be easier to have an already activated esim this time.

Yes, this is also my understanding and how I did (personally) with other "international" esim in the past.

That's a very good point, I'll watch out for this, thanks!

Yes, you can. I switched from a physical sim to an esim while in Europe and it worked fine.0
