Why don't I have coverage at Toronto Pearson?

I have Canada coverage and am from Montreal. I have coverage in Ottawa but when I had a layover at Pearson airport I had no coverage. Weird...

    Very weird indeed.

Do you have roaming turned on? I assume you do since you have coverage in Ottawa but that city is so close to Quebec you never know if it actually switches over to an Ontario tower.

    Hi @vovo_1976

This is very strange, try to reboot the phone and also enable the data roaming and be sure to have the network operator in automatic, I never had this problem

    Contact the support https://fizz.ca/en/support

I was just at Pearson Airport and my phone went to EXT. Roaming.

You can use the EXT rooming for a short period of time if there is no Fizz coverage in there.

    Hey! 👋

That does sound frustrating, especially at a major airport like Pearson. Since you have Canada-wide coverage and had service in Ottawa, a few things could explain the issue:

1️⃣ Network Handoff Issues – Fizz operates primarily on Videotron’s network in Quebec and parts of Ottawa, but outside these areas, it relies on partner networks (Bell, Rogers, or Telus). Sometimes, switching between networks doesn’t happen seamlessly, especially at airports where interference can be high.

2️⃣ Airplane Mode or SIM Refresh – If your phone was in airplane mode during your flight, try toggling it off and on again or restarting your phone. This forces it to reconnect to the strongest available network.

3️⃣ Manual Network Selection – Go to Settings > Cellular > Network Selection and try selecting a partner network manually (Bell, Rogers, or Telus).

4️⃣ SIM or Plan Issue? – If it happens again, try removing and reinserting your SIM card. Also, check if Fizz's partner coverage in Toronto is temporarily affected by network maintenance.

If you visit Toronto frequently and this keeps happening, you might want to contact Fizz support to check if there's an issue with your account roaming on partner networks.

Hope this helps! Safe travels! ✈️📶

    Thanks for the quick replies.
I have data roaming off since I'm scared to incur extra fees. And I had coverage in Ottawa...
I'll turn it on next time I go further into Canada ;)

Don't worry with Fizz will not overcharge (at most they can take the money that you leave in the Fizz's wallet) I always keep it on

    Hi again @vovo_1976

There are no roaming fees with Fizz. Your phone will either make calls and get data or it won’t. For instance, if you have a Canada plan and go to the USA with roaming on, your phone will not work, except for emergency calls to 911 and there be no roaming charges, even if you try to use your phone. It just won’t work.

    I hope this helps.

You shouldn't have to switch to the big 3 though at Pearson. Pearson is well covered by the Freedom network. Other than something being wrong with the OP's Fizz plan or some temporary technical glitch, there are two explanations I can think of.

    • The OP may have had Manual Network Selection enabled on their phone. And since they are from Montréal that would have been set to the Vidéotron network rather than Freedom.
    • The Freedom network at Pearson was overloaded. That was unfortunately a common occurrence several years back, but I haven't seen it anymore in recent years.
