How reliable is the VOLTE test (dialling #TEST)?
Hi, I swapped to the VOLTE sim a while ago for my Google Pixel 4a and thought I was all set for the 3G withdrawal. But when I dialed #TEST, it said that the test failed. Looking online, however, it seems like the Pixel 4a is VOLTE compatible, so I'm wondering if others got a false negative too?

Not completely a Fizz problem. A bit more complicated. :-)From the FAQ:
“Now, the question on everyone’s lips,
why are certain phones VoLTE certified for some Canadian operators, but not for others?
A mobile phone’s VoLTE certification is the result of a technical and commercial agreement between the manufacturer and the operator. Because each operator sets its own requirements and certifications, a given phone may be compatible with VoLTE for one operator, but not for another.
Here are the reasons why compatibility may differ between operators:
- Separate certifications: Each operator must certify the compatibility of a given phone with its own VoLTE network. If an operator has actively participated in this process and requested that the phone be compatible with its VoLTE configuration, the phone will be able to use VoLTE on that operator’s network.
- Various VoLTE configurations: Operators may use slightly different technical configurations for their VoLTE service. A phone that is certified with one operator may not be compatible with another operator’s configuration.
- Launch date: If an operator launches their VoLTE service and certifies a particular phone, that phone may not be compatible with another operator’s VoLTE if that operator has not yet launched their service or has not yet included that phone in their certification process.
- Certification cycle:
Note:
If you bring your own phone, and that phone is not on our list of VoLTE-compatible phones, it could still have the VoLTE feature and be able to place calls on the LTE network. Fizz will not, under any circumstances, block or prevent the operation of VoLTE on a phone that hasn’t been certified by the company. If the phone is compatible with the Fizz VoLTE configuration, it will be able to make VoLTE calls. However, we cannot guarantee the proper functioning of that VoLTE service on our network.”Cheers,
Brad

Make sure you enable VoLTE in Sim settings and reboot the phone before testing.
You should Aldo check the Sim is a VoLTE compatible Sim (identified by a red lightning icon on card).

I'm positive that I have my VOLTE sim installed. In my settings, the only options I have are LTE and 3G (I currently have LTE selected).

That is not the relevant setting, although choosing LTE over 3g might help in some cases. Look up how to enable VoLTE in your model and OS, sometime if it doesn't show up on Sim option you need to use a dialer code.

Hi
A lot of phone support VoLTE but they need to be certified/provisioned by the provider otherwise they cannot use the network. There are some kind of hack they will be able to unlock it loading a different software (however, I will not suggest in any way to do it, some of them they ask to root the phone)
From this list
only the 4a 5G is certified by Fizz0 -
That's really disappointing as my phone still works really well. Seeing as FIzz is quite uncooperative and unlocking my device screws up banking apps, I have no other recourse but to buy an expensive new device…

You still have till the summer, and I will not exclude the possibility that Fizz will offer some kind of perks to buy a new phone to users without a certified phone

Hi Tom,
would you please explain what you mean by “unlocking my device…”? All phones sold in Canada must be sold as unlocked by CRTC regulations.Cheers,
Brad

Hi Brad, I may have misspoken. What I meant is "rooting" my device.

Hi @Tom D.
Thank you for the clarification.
The certification of a phone on an operators Volte system is a bit complicated (at least to me) with requirement on both the phone manufacturer and the operator.
There is an FAQ on the topic, but understanding the details won’t help you in your situation unfortunately:-(
Cheers,
Brad

Thanks for the clarification. Seeing as I brought this phone to Fizz, I'll wait until July to find out for myself whether it works or not.
