Here is the explanation (or rather a guess) I came across on another forum:
8 is a lucky number in Chinese culture. The more 8s there are in a number, the better.
With Chinese New Year coming up on January 29, an extra 8 GB is being added to the 80 GB plan to reach the famous number 88.
Is Fizz preparing something special for Chinese New Year? 😁
