Yes, you get the points for the $$$ spent as it was mentioned above, but participating in the forum's discussions will allow you to progress faster 🙂.

10 points/1$ You will also earn points when you give an answer or a comment to a question (3 points) and each month when you are in the top 100 members active on the forum (50 points).

Yeah. You should check the date of the last reply on the post. If it's more than a few months it either has already been answered successfully or is no longer relevant.
