Visual Voicemail error: Message Synchronization failed

When I open visual voicemail (after receiving a notification of having a vm so I know one exists) nothing appears. When I pull down to refresh I get an error message pop up that says Message Synchronization failed. I'm on Android using a Pixel 4 XL and the app is up-to-date (software version 1.0 r141).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Reboot your phone
