Buy a phone as a gift?

My son bought the Fizz sim (only) while he looked at phones. I would like to buy him a Fizz phone but the checkout process makes me choose a plan. I just want to gift him a phone. Is that possible?

    My hypothesis is that you'd have to assign it to YOUR mobile plan. And give him the phone, in which anyone can put a SIM card, including his.

    If there is a rebate or any small prints, the catch-22 is that you will have to keep YOUR mobile plan for 12 months.
