Question about referral bonus

I am interested in adding a 2nd address I manage for my parents, can I refer myself or should I have them open an account.
The latter would more clearly apply the bonus, but it would be a headache to manage for them.

You need to open a new account if you want to use the referral code which will give you 50$ credit to your account and 50$ to your parent account.

The referral credit is much better than all the bonus that you can have having both plan under the same account.

I do not see what headache you are talking about, after the activation you forget about the account.
The payment are automatic, you need to go back only to change the plan, or change the payment method or close it. Or if the give your bonus or perks, but you will receive an email informing you.
