I am with Virgin Mobile. I still have about 8 months left on my contract (Ends Jan1, 2020). What steps do I need to take to switch. Do I still have to pay Virgin? I have never switched providers before. Please Help!

You can switch, however, you should validate if you have some fees since you are closing the contract with them.11

There are no penalties allowed in Canada for terminating cell phone contract.
However I assume you bought a phone through Virgin Mobile. In this case, you will have to pay for the remainder owing. It is usually several hundred dollars for 8 months. Confirm with Virgin Mobile.
If you want to switch, you need your VM account info to port your number to Fizz. Do NOT terminate service with VM. By porting your number over, your VM plan will be closed and VM will bill you for the hardware.

If you want to switch to Fizz and want to keep your old number, DO NOT CANCEL WITH VIRGIN FIRST or you will lose your number as soon as your contract is cancelled. Port over your number to Fizz and once the porting is completed, your Virgin account will automatically be closed. As mentioned, you may have to pay the balance of your hardware owing to Virgin. You will be billed automatically once your Virgin account has been closed.6

With virgin you should also have a pin to transfer your number10

You might have to pay your phone if they gave you one with your Contract!6
