In the US - Can't send text to non-iphone contacts

I receive texts from non-iPhone users but they don't receive when I text them. I don't have a problems with all other I-phone users though.

    I presume that you use IPhone.
    Are you using text message to send text or you're using Imessage ?

    To send a traditional text rather than through iMessage on a per-message basis, just do the following on your iPhone:
    Tap and hold on the message you want to send as a text.
    From the pop-up menu, select “Send as Text Message”

    Iphone uses Imessage which uses DATA (or WIFI) and not SMS
    So Make sure you have DAta and SMS plan for Travel in the US or it won't work
