I was wondering if I could still receive additional data if i used the upgrades that gave 500mb each month even if I currently don't have any data with my plan at the moment. Thanks!

I don't think you do. I added the 100mg upgrade to my wife's account which doesn't have any data. I believe some are using this option to provide enough data to use MMS.

I'm not sure if you really need data to send MMS, but yesterday I tested with Wi-Fi and data set offline and send a MMS picture and it seems to work without internet connection.
