Dollar signs not sent properly by SMS?

When I send an SMS that contains a dollar sign, the other person receives it as a circle with line:
$ -> ¤

    Yes. I confirmed it by sending a text with a $ sign. It sends a bizzare character on the other person's phone.
    Another character that doesn't seem to work properly is the @ symbol. Could be annoying when sending emails to contacts and them receiving an upside down ! sign.
