How many people buy plans with more data than they need so they can gift it?

    It's useful to have extra data anyway so you know you won't run out, then if you end up not using it you can gift it

    it's always good to have some and not need it than not have enough. You can gift extra and earn points

    Depends in your situation. If you have a big family, you could buy one 100 GB and a whole bunch of 1 GB plans and then pass data around as necessary.
