You can either go and actually try to gift some data. After you enter the recipients referral code, you select how much data to gift and it shows a minium and a maximum.
Another way is to look at data usage in your plan. How ever much data you have left in your plan from your current billing cycle's allotment (usually at the bottom, right where the green "Gift Data" button is), up to the next lower half gigabyte mark, is what you can gift.0

I find the easiest way to calculate what you re permitted to gift, is to keep in mind what you cannot gift when you look at your balances.“You cannot gift:
An unlimited feature, such as text, minutes or minutes for international calls
Add-Ons
Gifted data (no re-gifting allowed!)
