Do I need to purchases the text add-on, if all I use is WhatsApp?

WhatsApp is all I use for texting. Can I get away with not purchasing any text add-ons?

  No you need only the data, all the information for whatsapp is going to use data (therefore data or wifi), the incoming SMS are free, to receive the activation code
