Referral for mobile service

Let's say friend has a mobile service contract expiring in 20 days, can I refer them right now to take advantage of the $50 referral credit? Or do they have to setup their service right away? What is the workaround in that case?

  You open the account and enter the code. The code time will start on the date of activation of the account plan.
