Time for Modem Freedom in Quebec. Fizz, Are You Listening?
Since November 1, 2024, a new regulation in Belgium requires Internet service providers to allow users to choose their own modem, rather than being restricted to the model imposed by the provider. This is a significant step toward greater autonomy for internet users and aims to boost competition in the telecom sector.
I’d love to see something similar happen in Quebec, especially with Fizz.
Fizz’s modem is massive, with an outdated router still stuck on WiFi 5, leaving no other option but to use it in bridge mode. This setup results in having two routers—a waste of space and an inefficient solution.
Is there any plan to allow users the freedom to choose their modem?

The telecom sector from Quebec is so different from the one from Europe. For me it's like comparing planet Earth to Mars.

It's not a comparaison, it's information. Some smaller/independent companies in Quebec do allow their users to chose the modem they want.

Some of the big ones like to lock you in with their modem and their location fee. We need more pro consumer regulations!

I'm so grateful to be able to use only Fizz modem since I live in a small apartment and I have a good enough coverage already. I can see thought that only one extra room could require a router with a wider coverage. I wouldn't hold my breath tho… Fizz has definitely more important stuff to take care of before something like this

If you don't use a lot of bandwidth for your job that might be ok, but I'm a graphic artist and Wifi5 is just too slow, it's a very old and outdated technology.

Having more freedom is always desired, I hope that you will nevertheless find satisfaction with Fizz because they are constantly trying to improve even if it does not happen as quickly as we would like.

WiFi 5 can reach speeds up to 6.9 Gbps
WiFi 6 maximum speed of 9.6 Gbps
WiFi 7 reach a theoretical maximum of 46 Gbit/s

Yes and wifi 6 and 7 pass better through walls if I remember correctly.
