Why would my question somehow get marked closed and answered?

Whizzs can close your question for you when you don't do it.
They will chose a "best answer".
(And indeed, a best answer on the the HUB sometimes isn't necessarily the correct answer.)8 -

Then how do I get an answer if they close it before the question has been answered? Seems a little silly.8

If Whizz closed your question, then Whizz considers your question to be answered. Once a question/topic is closed, you cannot reopen it.
However you may choose to post a new topic to ask another question.6 -
But the answer from whizz wasn't even close to a correct answer. It was clear they hadn't even properly read the question.6
