What happens to ported phone number while awaiting for sim card to arrive?

If I sign up for a plan, and choose to port my old number when ordering my sim card, will I still be able to use that phone number with my existing mobile provider, while I await for the new sim card to arrive? Or does the phone number get frozen for the 2 -3 days that I will have to wait before my new sim card arrives? What happens to the ported number while I await for my sim card to arrive?

The number is still active until you activate your new SIM card.20

So let's say you wait 5 days for the SIM. nothing happens. when you activate your new SIM you will be without phone for about 2 hours, then the line is on your new SIM.
So if you don't receive the SIM or you loose it, nothing happens until you activate it.16 -
You are not able to do phone porting without FIZZ sim card in hand. Porting from big 3 take several minutes to be effective if you have right account number. No worry, your old number is always working before that. It's only down in less than 5 minutes in my case (telus to fizz), other case is 10 minutes (freedom --> fizz)18

So basically until I have my new fizz sim card in hand and actually activate it, my old phone number will still continue to work on my current bell mobility plan?17

I makes sense to actually have a physical SIM to perform the final activation, imagine the nightmare of having your service ported but the SIM card is lost during delivery.18

correct you will keep you phone number in the old sim until you activate the new sim from Fizz16

My no. Ported in 10min. But i did it after getting the sim card.12

Port only when you get the SIM. Anyway, you need to enter the new SIM card activation code on the website. Should be functional within minutes afterwards, though some have claimed longer wait times (hours+).9
