It's as simple as the fact that Canada networks are run by an Oligopoly (few large quasi-monopolies), so they can keep prices high and are under no pressure to innovate.3 -

It's good you figured it out! Usually, when a new SIM is detected, it does a provisioning to get the settings, but it seems you needed to force it on yours.1 -
