Turns out the river is as shallow as 10m and shipping going through the locks are maxed at 8m of draft. But still deep enough to get into a whole heap of trouble if not careful.

Are you thinking of tossing a tall person? I would guess without checking 20m or less as average, keep in mind the big tankers have a pretty deep draft. In the Sinclair river I was at 20m depth and a tanker sailed by above me....pretty scarry, it all went dark and noisy.
